Article summary

You can choose whether to track total carbs, net carbs, or diabetes carbs when you log carbs in the daily log.

  1. Go to Settings icon Settings.
  2. In the My Settings section, select App Settings icon App Settings.
  3. In the Macros Settings section, select Carbs to Track and choose one of the following options. If you have diabetes, consult with your doctor before selecting an option.
    • Total carbs: All carbs, including fiber, sugar alcohols, and allulose.
    • Net carbs: Total carbs minus fiber, sugar alcohols, and allulose. People on Keto and low carb diets typically choose to track net carbs.
Note: If you live in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or the UK you should select Net carbs. See the Carb calculations for Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK section for details.
    • Diabetes net carbs: provide a more precise estimate of carbs that affect glucose. Carb Manager provides two standard choices.
      • Diabetes carbs (UCSF): Total carbs minus fiber, allulose, and half of the sugar alcohols. This is another way of calculating net carbs that affect glucose and is used primarily by people with diabetes. It is based on UCSF's Diabetes Teaching Center's publications. Always consult with your physician prior to selecting a carbs tracking option.
      • Diabetes carbs (ADA): Total carbs minus allulose, half of the fiber (if 5g or more), and half of the sugar alcohols (if 5g or more). This is another way of calculating net carbs that affect glucose and is used primarily by people with diabetes. It is based on the American Diabetes Association's publications. Always consult with your physician prior to selecting a carbs tracking option.

Carb Manager will now track your preferred carbs.

Carb calculations for Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK

In general, the nutrition values of all common foods (for example, vegetables, eggs, meats, and more) are the same around the world. However, some countries account for fiber differently on nutrition labels for branded foods. In the US, fiber is included in total carbs on nutrition labels, but in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, fiber is not included in the carbohydrates value on nutrition labels. Because Carb Manager’s food database is based on US standards and includes branded foods from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK, Carb Manager accounts for the difference as follows:

  • Total carbs = carbohydrates as displayed on nutrition labels in AU, NZ, ZA, and the UK, plus the fiber value
  • Net carbs = carbohydrates as displayed on nutrition labels in AU, NZ, ZA, and the UK (because fiber is not included)

Most Carb Manager users from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK will want to track net carbs.
